REJOINDER: We Have Not Abandoned Our Ghanaian Culture

Image
Ayi, my neighbour 24, paid me a visit one Saturday morning. In the course of our conversation, he chipped in a subject of very importance to us all as Ghanaians. What makes you a Ghanaian? What makes me a Ghanaian? Ayi made mention of certain common ethics that cut across every household, tribe and ethnic group; “I recall how my mother will ask me to say thank you whenever I was given anything by someone. I was also asked never to point at a place with my left hand when giving directions to people, never to take something or give something to someone with my left hand, show respect to the elderly by offering them our seats in buses or trains” he said. Growing up as a Ghanaian child, most of us experienced this and have grown by it.   Ayi claims that today, these values he speaks of seem to be hard to find in our societies. Yes, I agree but also disagree to the fact that, we Ghanaians have adopted the western culture and have abandoned ours. Ayi, if you a...

I HATE YOU

Image
I hate you because you are not real. I’m not judging, but you deserve to be in Hell. You are aware and conscious of your actions. Your actions hurt and oppress the poor, yet you pretend as if you are unaware. I hate you because you read a subject that inculcated sycophant behaviour in you. You cheered at us and promise us to help you to achieve your goal. After, we become strangers to you. We knock at your door, and you do not respond. We are not requesting that you feed us but all we need is a little support as we did to you, so that we can also achieve our goal just as you did. You see why I hate you? I hate you because you are a cheat. Every cheat is a thief. You steal what belongs to us. You reap what you have not sown. What about the ones we don’t know? I guess you really deserve a blow. I hate you because you are greedy and selfish. You dress in suit and tie; sit in a luxurious office with benefits. Yet, you forcefully take from those who don’t have enough...

I AM JUST A BOY

Image
I am just a boy who lives with my parents.   Erands , I ran. Comands , I obey.   I have No say when heads are put together, and mouths are speaking.    Where I come from, respect is like a rule.   You need to be a fool to show respect.   When you seek for justice, rights, and privileges , you become the stubborn child. I am just a boy who is counting on his days.   Sometimes, I sit to ponder and wonder when I will be a man.   It is like a slave or a prisoner whose hopes await the day of his freedom.   When I wake up every morning, I measure my height just to check if I am really growing up.   To me, growing tall meant growing up.   I am just a boy who goes out to play with friends and return home with sand all over my body. Did I dig a well, or swim in a pool of sand?    We start games nicely and happily but end it up with a fight.  I leave...

TEARS OF OUR MOTHERS

We have shed tears for long And our eyes can no longer hold on Solutions to our woes have been prolong That we know not where we belong Death is what our mothers face We keep losing them day by day All we seek is God’s grace To be showered on us again To bear forth a child is a blessing But to die in the process is unfortunate Let not hesitate in advancing Before it becomes too late to be late Where are our leaders? Where are our fathers? Are they forsaking their responsibilities? We need them to protect us with their feathers Because It’s time to realize the source of their families?

PREJUDICE BREEDS INJUSTICE AND WAR

Image
"Until, the philosophy, which holds one race superior and another Inferior Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, Everywhere is WAR." Those are the words of Bob Marley, in a song he tittles "WAR" Prejudice is the dust thrown on the human eye, thus tears is where the outcome lies. An irrational hostile attitude, fear or hatred towards a particular group, race or religion, Or an adverse judgement or opinion formed before hand or without knowledge of the facts. This is how i understand, define and term prejudice, how do you? Humans have refused to understand that all men cannot be equal. All men can never be rich, neither can they be poor. All men can never be white nor black. All men can never belong to the same religion. Never!!! Until we understand this, prejudice will continue to dwell amongst men and conflicts and intolerance shall be the harvests, which will ruin us down. Dear reader, why have we as a people allowed p...

THE POWER OF MONEY

Image
Mavado, a Jamaican reggae/dance hall artist voiced out in his song, titled MONEY, that "Money can buy diamonds and gold. Money can make girls love you the way you want it. Money can make you have a lot of fake friends. Money can buy and do many other things, but money can't buy LIFE". Life is the most precious and most valuable thing anybody can have. It cannot be bought. To me, life is a gift from above. It is the almighty God who gives life. What else can money do to you? Money can help you enter a whole lot of places. It can help you gain respect. With money, you can do good and can also do evil. Comfortable standard of living depends solely on how heavy your account is. Money can take you away from the sick-bed, but can't bring you back to life when you are dead. Note that money is not God or an idol to be worshiped as many are doing. I once disagreed with a friend for saying "Money is life" though he tried his best to convince me and...

WHO IS THE MADMAN?

My little stubborn brother always pesters me to buy him ice cream. Recently, he cried severely and refused to stop until I buy him yoghurt. I had no choice than to use my last 1.00gh for his yoghurt. He followed me to a nearby supermarket and on our way back home, the little boy screamed and called, " bro Nat". As I turned, i noticed that fear has embraced him. "Nii, what is the matter with you?" I asked, and there, he pointed at a poor dirty wretched young man passing by. Nii, my little boy called him a MAD MAN and  I said to myself, this boy will call the poor dirty man on the street a madman but when he grows up, he will recognize who the real madman is. There are many people out there who don't really know what madness is. Many people out there will describe the mad man as the filthy dirty wretched man who has lost his mind, eating from the ground and refuse dumps, sleeps on the streets and in some cases parades the street half-naked. Well, ...
